This fruity thick beverage made from blended raw fruit or vegetables as been reckoned on by parents as a healthy beverage that they can feel good about buying for their kids. However, another study that was published in the British Medical Journal kicked against the myth surrounding the smoothie in a major way.

According to the journal, “many popular bands of smoothies marketed to children contains even more quantity of the sugar than a can of soda or several candy bars combined.”

According to the Munchies:

The classic green-tinted Original Super food from Odwalla contains 49 grams of sugar per bottle.

The cold pressed Blueprint cranberry blend contains 51 grams of sugar in every bottle.

The Bolthouse Farms Blue Goodness blend contains 116 grams of sugar in a 32-ounce bottle.

The items listed above exceed a can of coke that contains 44 grams of sugar. Always remember that the normal recommended daily allowance of sugar consumption for kids is just four (4) teaspoons or about 16 grams.
Fruit on its own contains natural sugars, while the fresh fruit contains some fibers that help to keep our body from assimilating all the sugar. Smoothies on its own have refined sugars. The bottled smoothie drinks add sugars in the form of honey or sweet syrups, while the advertisers of this product claim it to be “all natural.”

If your kids demand for smoothies, the best thing for you to do is make them at home. By minimizing the amount of fruit you use and adding some veggies will help you to control the amount of sugar content afterward.

Our San Diego orthodontics team at Moser Orthodontics knows how important oral hygiene is, whether you have braces or not. If you do wear braces, caring for your gums and teeth can be a little challenging. If you aren’t practicing daily oral hygiene, you can become more prone to tooth decay, and cavities during your treatment time.

Make sure to brush your teeth every morning and night, also after you finish eating, this will help keep your mouth clean and free of bacteria. Flossing is another important part of your hygiene routine. Flossing with braces can be hard, but not impossible. We can help you be more comfortable and teach you how to properly floss your teeth while you have braces.

Flossing tips for patients with braces:

Flossing Under Wires: When the floss is behind the wires, use your hands to move the floss up and down along the wires to remove food.

Flossing Between Teeth: Floss between your teeth like usual without braces, move the floss up and down between your teeth. Make sure to use a clean section of floss for every tooth.

Once You Finish Flossing, we suggest you use a proxy brush or water pik after you finish brushing your teeth. Anyone of these tools can help remove any loose food and make sure that your braces and teeth are clean.

Keep Up Good Oral Hygiene Habits

Having good oral hygiene habits when you have braces can help you get the smile of your dreams. When you get your braces off, you need to make sure to keep this good oral hygiene routine in check. Make sure to visit your general dentist for regular cleanings. If you have any questions make sure to visit us or give us a call.

The San Diego Orthodontic practice of Dr. Lindsay Pfeffer and Dr. Noel Moser, recognize that every patient is different, and we work hard to cater to the unique needs of each patient. We offer the latest in dental braces and Invisalign, plus we treat our patients like family and will go out of our way to make them smile from the inside out! For a free consultation, call us today at 858-756-6878.

At i-Orthodontics, we love nothing more than seeing our patients start down the path towards a beautiful, healthy smile. It warms our hearts to help our patients improve their oral health, aesthetic appearance, and overall confidence with a brand new smile, and nothing makes us happier than the look on our patients’ faces when they get their braces off for the “big reveal.” That’s why summer is one of our favorite seasons – it’s the ideal time for starting orthodontic treatment!

Starting Orthodontic Treatment in San Diego, California

There are a many things that make summer the best time for starting treatment. One of the biggest advantages is scheduling. We know how busy our patients are – sometimes, it seems like kids are just as busy as professionally working parents! We recognize that between classes, sports, music, theater, groups, clubs, friends, extra-curricular activities, and all of the complexities of a modern adult life, fitting in time for orthodontic activities can be very difficult. But with summer vacation, it’s much easier for many of our patients to make the time to come in. This will let us get all of the legwork done while you have an open schedule, making things easier as we transition into the school year.

It’s not just scheduling that’s easier. The summer period allows patients more time to adjust to their new braces before returning to school to see their friends in the fall. Occasionally, patients will have a slight lisp as they get accustomed to speaking with braces – this goes away within a few days, but during summer they won’t have to worry about participating in class activities. Starting their braces in the off season will also let your child get accustomed to the look and feel of their new smile, making them much more confident about wearing them at school. They’ll see that braces really aren’t bad after all!

The San Diego Orthodontic practice of Dr. Lindsay Pfeffer recognizes that every patient is different, and we work hard to cater to the unique needs of each patient.

Other than cosmetic reasons for orthodontic treatment, there are a significant number of reasons for seeing an orthodontist to improve your health.

Having a bad bite can be harmful to your overall well being. People who have malocclusions (when both sets of your teeth do not “bite” properly) can experience random health problems. Correcting your bite can help you improve your quality of life. The following list contains several of health conditions that can be alleviated with orthodontic treatments:

Neck Aches/Shoulder Pain – An Imbalance in the forces of the same network of tendons, joints, muscles, and bones that can lead to headaches and also neck and shoulder ache.

Headaches- If you often get headaches or pressure behind your eyes, temples or the back of your head it could be due to tension in your jaw.

TMJ – The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. When this joint is injured or damaged, it can lead to a disorder called temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome.

Sleep Disruptions – If you suffer from sleep apnea, are a chronic snorer or just suffer from poor sleep in general, it might be due to a lack of oxygen caused by a misaligned jaw. Your jaw posture can have a big impact on your breathing, and corrective alignment treatments can lead to improved oxygen flow, and as a result, give you a better night’s sleep.

Sinus Problems – If you suffer from mouth breathing or other difficulties breathing, the shape of your mouth and jaw may be to blame. The structure of your mouth and jaw can cause your sinuses to be narrow and compressed. By making adjustments to your palate and jaw, the sinuses widen which can allow for a more efficient airflow.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome – Some theories link overall good oral hygiene with the treatment and management of IBS. The mouth is the beginning of the digestive tract; so poor oral hygiene can negatively impact other parts of your digestive health.

Higher Self Esteem – Many people report more self-confidence, higher self-esteem and less stress as the result of corrective orthodontic work.

Children from the age of 7-12

1/3 children can benefit from wearing braces. The American Orthodontist Association recommends that all children should see an orthodontist for consultation by the age of 7. By the time your child is 7, your child’s teeth have developed enough for your orthodontist to check the condition of their teeth and recommend braces or other corrective appliances to help them have a nicer smile in the future. It is better to start treatment at around this age because children’s teeth, face, and jaw are still developing and makes it easier to adjust them. Starting early treatment can also help your children avoid other problems that come with having crooked teeth like; tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease.

Teenagers from the age of 12-18

Around 80 percent of teens in the United States have worn braces. A lot of teenagers have had problems with their teeth and complications with their mouths. Most of these teens benefit from having braces or other corrective alternatives. Teenagers that have under bites, overbites, or crowded teeth can fix these problems by wearing braces. With today’s technology there are so many braces and corrective appliances that are discreet but also comfortable and can correctly align your teeth. Invisalign teen is one of the most popular products used to straighten teeth today. Most teens are good candidates for Invisalign in San Diego, but it is always better to just come in for your free orthodontic consultation and let us take a look at your smile and recommend what is best for you.

Adults from the ages of 19-70+

According to the American Association of Orthodontics 25 percent of people wearing braces are adults. Adults of any age are ideal candidates for braces. Some of our patients are in their 70s and have achieved wonderful results. Braces can help adults that may be suffering with other oral problems such as gum defects, plaque accumulation and crooked teeth. Having an easy to clean smile can help eliminate and prevent these problems from occurring. In addition to these benefits, a lot of adults enjoy having a beautiful smile they can be proud of. Braces can improve your smile drastically and improve your self-esteem over time. We have a wide range of treatment options such as clear braces and Invisalign to help you get that beautiful smile in a discreet and comfortable way.

The San Diego Orthodontic practice of Dr. Lindsay Pfeffer and Dr. Noel Moser, recognize that every patient is different, and we work hard to cater to the unique needs of each patient.

If you are in search of braces, there is a huge selection to choose from. This gives you the option to choose braces that suit your needs and lifestyle. We offer everything from colored braces that you can customize to whatever colors you would like, to clear braces, which are a more discreet option. We leave the choice up to you! We understand that this can be a difficult decision but below are some pointers on what to choose!

Colored Braces: How to Choose

Having colored braces is very popular with younger kids and teenagers, because it allows them to personalize their braces. Colors can be added to braces via the elastics that are used to attach the wire of the brace to the brackets on your teeth. We offer almost any color you could think of! Colored braces are an awesome way to make a bold fashion statement. You can start with your favorite colors, or change them according to the season. Say around Christmas time you can do green and red braces, or orange during fall, the possibilities are endless. Whatever you have in mind just check with us to make sure that we have the colors you want. The great thing about having colored braces is that you can change them anytime you come in and get your braces adjusted, so anytime you feel like you need a new style, we can easily change it up to give you something new.

Clear Braces: The Benefits

If you feel that colored braces aren’t really your thing, we have several clear options that you can choose from. Clear braces are usually preferred by adult patients, or those who don’t want to draw too much attention to their orthodontic work. Clear braces are ideal if you’re in a professional position or just if you feel that having clear braces would be better for you. Clear braces are made of ceramic, plastic or a combination of both.

My teeth are already straight after completing orthodontic treatment, so why do I still have to wear a retainer? Although your treatment has slowly guided and rotated your teeth into their ideal positions, your gums and bones will need a bit more time to stabilize in their new positions. Your retainer has been designed as a perfect mold of your newly aligned smile, and it helps make sure that your teeth won’t go back into their previous positions. By wearing your retainer, you’re providing your mouth, gums and bones with extra support they need to become fully used to their new placement, reducing the chance of a relapse and needing to begin your orthodontic treatment again.

What types of retainers are available? There are two types of retainers: clear retainers that fit like a mouth guard, and the more well known “Hawley” retainers made of pink acrylic and wire. Both have their own unique benefits. A clear retainer is great for patients who have been told to wear their retainers during the day as well as overnight. Needing to wear your retainers during both night and day for a short time at the end of treatment is a common requirement for many patients. Hawley retainers are commonly used for patients who have had jaw surgery or whose treatment was more complex. This kind of retainer offers a higher level of stability at the end of a course of treatment.

How long is it necessary to wear a retainer?

Most patients will be instructed to wear their retainers for at least 8 hours a day, which coincides perfectly with a good night of sleep! Of course, like all orthodontic treatment, your personal recommendation might be a little bit longer depending on the complexity of your case.

Most patients are encouraged to wear a retainer for at least 24 months after the end of their treatment. In fact, it’s a great idea to continue to wear your retainers nightly indefinitely to keep your beautiful smile in perfect condition. That way retention of that beautiful smile is for life.

By the time you get your retainer, you will already be accustomed to wearing an orthodontic appliance and it won’t feel so unusual. Further, since you’ll be able to remove it (and in some cases only have to wear it at night), it won’t interrupt your daily routines and will be very easy to keep clean.

Your retainer is an easy way to ensure your beautiful, healthy smile stays that way. When you’ve invested so much into your treatment, make it last a lifetime by wearing your retainer.

By following some simple guidelines, you can ensure a smooth and successful treatment period. If you have any questions about the “do’s and don’ts” of wearing braces, don’t hesitate to contact our office.

Eating

When wearing braces, there are certain types of foods that can damage your brackets, therefore increasing the time of your treatment. By simply taking steps to avoid sticky, chewy, crunchy and hard foods, your orthodontic experience will go by much smoother without the need for unnecessary damage.

Cleaning

Maintaining a clean mouth requires focused attention, even more important when going through orthodontic care. It’s necessary to brush your teeth regularly and floss often in order to avoid plaque buildup, bad breath and of course, the worst, tooth decay. It may seem like a real hassle, but it will be well-worth it in the end!

Sports

Protecting your smile is important when participating in sports especially when wearing braces. That is why mouth guards are essential to protect your teeth and gums from injury. Not all mouth guards are created equal, some work better than others, check with our team first. We can steer you in the right direction when deciding which one is best when participating in sports.

Following these tips during the duration of your treatment puts you in the best position to achieve optimum results in a timely fashion. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact our office. We are here to assist you!
